My Quiltcon entry / Moje zgłoszenie na Quiltcon

wersja polska jest pod zdjęciami:)

I wrote once a very personal post about submitting quilts for contests. I was then sure that I never will enter my quilt to the big contest (like Quiltcon). But this year I thought that my very old idea (from 2012, the time I was making THIS mini-quilt) should finally be executed. I'm not good in finishing quilts, especially now when I have a baby at home, so I thought that I needed some deadline. Quiltcon deadline seamed great for this purpose! I thought also that I may give it a try and just find out if my quilt is good enought for the show or not.

So I was very busy lately. Making this quilt was very strange, because I only had about 45 minutes each day for piecing (sometimes a little bit more, sometimes at all, because my little 7 month daughter is the rare example of baby who don't need long naps during the day). Only on quilting I had more hours in the row (during the weekend, with a help of my husband and older daughter).

My quilt is a modern version of New York Beauty block. I designed names of the cities and put them on the outer circles instead of rays of sunshine. Most names are paper-pieced, but there are also some appliqued and pieced blocks (from wonderful Kumiko Fujita fabrics). While I was piecing the blocks I was often listing to the song 'The sound of San Francisco' by Global Deejays and at first I wanted to piece some of the cities mentioned in this song. Finally, I picked some cities important to me with rather short names (name of my hometown is too long unfortunately and won't fit into two blocks, even as applique). I picked also some places I would love to visit some day. Plus a little hidden name of the city connected with Quiltcon 2016:) (when I saw the name of this city on the Kumiko Fujita fabric I just knew I had to include it!).

I tried to incorporate some characteristic symbols in each block. So you'll find yellow quarter inner circle as symbol of yellow cabs and quarter inner circle with apples - in New York city block. The name of Tokyo is narrowed to show its character (traffic jams, high buildings), I used yellow print from Lighthearted collection designed by Ayumi (Pink Penguin) and the text in the narrowed letters is cut, so you won't be able to read whole words - this was the idea how to show that Japanese is very difficult language to learn. Sydney name is appliqued and I chose a font which brings me in mind surfers, I also put some other sea symbol (mermaids). The only one division of MQG in South America is in Sao Paulo, so I put in this block some sewing notions (my sister in law lived there recently and I used some colors which remind me her), I've added exclamation to show how loud and festive is carnival there. In the rest of the blocks I used mainly colors as symbols.
This is very personal quilt, so some symbols mean something only for me.

I named this wall hanging 'Patchwork is so exciting'. I took part of this name from Suzuko Koseki print. On the SK fabric you'll find the sentence 'Paris is so exciting', but I cut 'Paris' and put it in the inner circle of NY city block. Then I found word 'patchwork' on the very same fabric and I though that it would be a good sentence. So I had to shorten the cirlces in one of the NY city blocks and put it there. I repeated this way of hiding sentences in other blocks too (I love it so much that I wanted to repeat it over and over, but I stopped myself:).

The detail love about this quilt is selvedge binding. I made such binding in 2011 (HERE) and it was totally inspired by Suzuko Koseki way of binding potholders and other works. I made it a bit differently: I joined selvedges before binding a quilt (Suzuko Koseki sew a piece of binding on the edge and leave it raw).
I also embroider my name on the binding ('Julianna made it'), because one of the selvedges was quite plain (near the left bottom corner).

When I was making this quilt I realised that it is very similar to other quilt of mine, Autumn Spin (HERE). There are some differences (for example I didn't use so much brown), but I think I might have just be fixed in one style.
'Patchwork is so exctigin' reflects good my current color likes. I love lately navy and comparing to my previous quilts, there's a lot of navy in it.

I don't actually have a hope that my quilt will make a cut. There were over 1800 quilt entered, so you probably know how small are chances. I noticed that in the past Quiltcon shows most of the quilts were made of solids and probably while making quilt for show I should consider narrowing the number of prints I used, but simply it wouldn't be so 'mine' quilt. I make from time to time some things using majority of solids and the original NY block made by me in the past was using a lot of solids too, but this time I just wanted to make it this way. Using my favorite prints (old and new) in favorite colors. Dot.

Patchwork is so exciting, entered to the Modern Traditionalism category

my original blocks made short after I came up with idea of making NY Beauty with names of cities

Mój quilt to nowoczesna wersja bloku New York Beauty. Podczas szycia makatki często słuchałam piosenki "The sound of San Francisco" (Global Deejays) i początkowo myślałam o umieszczeniu niektórych nazw miast występujących w tym utworze.

Znajdziecie więc żółtą ćwiartkę koła symbolizującą żółte taksówki i ćwiartkę koła z jabłkami - w bloku z miastem New York.

Nazwałam ten quilt "Patchwork is so exciting". Na tkaninie SK można znaleźć napis "Paris is so exciting" - ucięłam Paryż, a resztę umieściłam w bloku z NY. Skróciłam kółka w innym bloku z NY i umieściłam go tam.

Makatka "Patchwork is so exciting" dobrze oddaje moje aktualne upodobania kolorystyczne. Uwielbiam ostatnio granat i w porównaniu do moich poprzednich prac jest tu go naprawdę sporo.

Zostało zgłoszonych ponad 1800 quiltów, więc same rozumiecie dlaczego. Użyłam ulubionych tkanin (nowych i starych). Kropka.

  5. Bravo!!! Gorgeous, and so creative! Best of luck! I looked for Suzuko Koseki's raw selvage binding and how to do it, but I can't find it anywhere. Can you enlighten me, please? I love it!

  6. Thank you so much for sharing the details behind making this amazing quilt, Julianna. I was wondering about the method you used for the names - which looks amazing! Varying the fonts and colours creates different vibes, quite in sync with each city. Really incredible work. A meaningful and very detailed piece that showcases your style and creativity wonderfully. I love it and think it's an inspired piece!

  11. I think it's beautiful and very creative. Last year's QuiltCon quilts were all solids and negative space. I hope this year they recognise that that is not the only kind of modern quilt.

  15. Such a beautiful and detailed quilt!
I find it rather strange that Quiltcon dictates that Modern quilts should be made out of solids! They obviously have no idea that you can make gorgeous quilts from modern prints too! Good luck with your entry!
