Wersja polska już wkrótce:)
Summer Breeze is a fresh quilt with a modern twist. I made it for my daughter's bed, but it could brighten your bed too!
This quilt was made in cooperation with two great artists: Mo Bedell, fabric designer and Krista Withers, modern long-arm quilter (HERE and HERE you can read full story, you'll find there also photos of finished quilt).
This quilt was made in cooperation with two great artists: Mo Bedell, fabric designer and Krista Withers, modern long-arm quilter (HERE and HERE you can read full story, you'll find there also photos of finished quilt).
Finished size: approx. 59" x 75" (150 cm x 190 cm).
This quilt is at intermediate level for quilters already familiar with sewing curves. If you are new in sewing curves, I recommend piecing first a few blocks to become confident in this technique (when I was new to this technique, at first I find it quite difficult to learn, but after piecing few blocks, I couldn't stop - it was so fun!).
If you have any questions or doubts about this tutorial or used techniques, please don't hesitate to ask me! :)
What you will need?
Half yard* bundle of Full Moon Lagoon by Mo Bedell
2-3 panels (1-2 in magenta and 1 in aqua) from Full Moon Lagoon by Mo Bedell
approx. 1 yard of background fabrics (i.e. Essex linen)
Fabric for backing
Freezing paper
Batting
Rotary cutter and cutting mat
Matching thread
Templates for Drunkard's Path block or Accuquilt GO! cutting machine with Drunkard's Path 3 1/2" finished die
*please note that the amount of fabrics used depends on amount of fussy cuts and the size of the outer border. Half yard bundle let you make the same quilt as mine, but you can use Fat quarter bundle and make some alternations in borders.
Seam allowances
I use 3/8" seam allowances. Most of the quilters use 1/4" seam allowances. The difference between main part pieced using 3/8" s.a. and pieced using 1/4" is approx. 2". Size of finished quilt pieced using 3/8" s.a. is approx. 59" x 75". Quilt made using 1/4" s.a. will be sligthly bigger. For making quilt that measures exactly 59" x 75", measure main part with background border after piecing it and add narrower outer border.

DP block = Drunkard's Path 3 1/2" finished block
Step 1 - Cutting and piecing main part with Drunkard's Path blocks
The best way of cutting DP blocks is using Accuquilt GO! cutting machine and Drunkard's Path 3 1/2" finished die. You can also make templates by your own and rotary cut DP blocks, but be aware that this quilt contains 131 DP blocks (HERE you'll find the links to tutorials how to make it).
Cut the following amount of DP blocks as indicated on this scheme:

Cut the following amount of DP blocks as indicated on this scheme:
Cut 10 DP blocks from background fabric.
Sew DP blocks using the following guide:
After piecing all DP blocks, cut off of each DP block two stripes:
Piece DP blocks into sections B-H using the following schemes:
(some sections contain squares and rectangles cut from background fabric)
Step 2 - Preparing and sewing on appliques
On the left side of panels trace shapes of seahorses, jellyfish and other sea creatures onto freezing paper. Cut the shapes with a small seam allowance and iron freezing paper shapes onto left side of panels. Cut all shapes with sharp scrissors. Lay them on the background and when you're satisfied with the layout, remove papers and iron shapes onto background. Zig-zag stitch appliques.
Applique layout in Summer Breeze:
(it contains 2 starfish which are not on the panels)
Step 3 - Adding Borders

Piece 4" wide strips of background fabric to top and botom of main part and press the seams. Piece 4" wide strips of background fabric to left and right side of main part and press the seams.
Cut 18" lenght strips with different windths from all fabrics in the collection (4 strips of each print). Some of the strips can contain fussy cut shapes. Sort the strips in "rainbow" order:
Piece strips into borders and press the seams. Piece 18" squares cut from panels to the top and bottom border. Piece left and right border to main part of quilt and press the seams. Piece top and bottom border to main part of quilt and press the seams.

Step 4 - Quilting and binding
Prepare backing (you can use FQ bundle and panels leftovers). Baste it and quilt it (or send it to long-arm quilter, maybe to uber-talented Krista?:). Make binding or use ready made binding. Add label and… enjoy!

Your quilt is so beautiful! I can't share any quilt market experiences because I've never been. It would be my dream trip for sure!
Thanks so much for this tutorial - I completely love this quilt and have just ordered a bundle of full moon lagoon, so I think it's a must make for me :o)
OdpowiedzUsuńI recently started sewing curves and asked myself why I was afraid of them for so long ! I'll keep this quilt on my wish list.....
OdpowiedzUsuńJulianna, this is incredible! I saw it in photos from Quilt Market and marvelled! I have never been to Quilt Market and I have only sewn one curved block before - LOTS of pins were involved! I love the look of curves in a quilt so I think curved piecing might have to be my next challenge. Thanks for the chance to win, and the wonderful tutorial!
OdpowiedzUsuńI just bought a bundle of this fabric and I love love love! this quilt pattern.
OdpowiedzUsuńFabulous tutorial! What a beautiful quilt you created too :) I have just become comfortable sewing curves and really enjoy it. You are so right to that it takes practice but quickly becomes so fun.
OdpowiedzUsuńIt has been a long time since I've sewed any blocks with curved seams. I'd like to try again and this pattern looks like it would be a lot of fun to make for my granddaughters and good learning experience.
OdpowiedzUsuńBeautiful and original... love the quilt you made your daughter!! Although your quilt looks complicated, you have laid out the steps perfectly to follow with success. I don't have any experience with the Drunkards Path blocks but have always wanted to try them 'one day'! Thanks for the chance!!
OdpowiedzUsuńThis quilt is stunning. I am impressed with all the curves you sewed. My first curve was a disaster. I ended up taking a class on curves just to learn this block. It worked. I found out that I need to pin them. I tried without pins and I guess I need more fabric. I am very impressed with your quilt. The applique is gorgeous. Love that you added starfish too.
OdpowiedzUsuńYour quilt looks amazing:) I never sewn curves yet, they look so daunting!
OdpowiedzUsuńI love to sew curves, I even made a little video that people find helpful. I love the idea of DP waves, they are beautiful. Thank you for the chance to win.
OdpowiedzUsuńI love your quilt; thanks for the tutorial! Sewing curved blocks are definitely on my "bucket list," but I've not tried them yet! Thanks for the chance.
OdpowiedzUsuńBeautiful! I do a lot of improv curves. I love doing them and seeing how things go together. I haven't tried Drunkards Path...it has always intimidated me! This could be the time to learn!
Bajecznie kolorowe tkaniny wybrałaś i efekt przyprawia o zawrót głowy :)
OdpowiedzUsuńbeautiful quilt.. I've only sewn curves once in quilting.. wasn't as hard as I thought once I figured it out..
OdpowiedzUsuńThis quilt is one of the most beautiful quilts I've ever seen! Your work is so inspiring!!!I only made one quilt as far and it was created with DP's. I loved it and can't wait to do some more!!!
OdpowiedzUsuńThanks for the tutorial and for the giveaway!!!xxx
What a great quilt!
OdpowiedzUsuńI've only done a little curved piecing and I definitely need more practise!
YOur quilt is just amazing, I keep seeing it on blog posts about Quilt Market and it always makes me stop to look again!
OdpowiedzUsuńI've never been to Quilt Market and doubt I ever will, unless the move it to England!
I've also NEVER sewn a curve... it's about time I did!
I've made several curved piecing quilts, and love the flow of your design. The trim after sewing is a clever way to get those tight corners. Love it!
OdpowiedzUsuńŚwietny tutorial,Julka! Bardzo czytelny i skrupulatnie przygotowany. Na pewno przyda się wielu z nas. Ja uwielbiam szycie po łuku i już go sobie dodałam do ulubionych:)
OdpowiedzUsuńBardzo pracochłonny tutek! Ale wszystko wyśmienicie pokazane!
OdpowiedzUsuńPiękny jest ten quilt!!!
I've just started sewing curves, I've got to the point where cutting the pieces is the hardest bit and I'm not unpicking anymore. I love your quilt and Full Moon Lagoon is one of my favourite new lines.
OdpowiedzUsuńnot long after i started quilting, i took an afternoon class on sewing circles into a whole background piece. i never worked so hard! i managed to sew one large circle in and one small one and it pressed flat, but what a relief to pack up and go more and bury that piece in the bottom of my stash. now, when i want circles, i applique them on. i still have a drunkard's path piece on my to do list ... i would love to win your precut pieces! thanx for the great giveaway.
OdpowiedzUsuńI did my first curves last week! I hated the cutting but the sewing was fun - still need a lot of practice! Your quilt is gorgeous!
A trip to quilt market is a dream trip for me. Thanks!
OdpowiedzUsuńBeautiful!! I love curves, and don't mind sewing them!
OdpowiedzUsuńI saw this at Quilt Market! I can't wait to make it!!
OdpowiedzUsuńI've never sewn curves, this would be a great chance!
OdpowiedzUsuńIt's been a while since I sewed curves but there is a drunkards path quilt on my to-do list. I did a couple of circle appliques yesterday but it's not the same.
OdpowiedzUsuńAle się napracowałaś przy tym poście :)
OdpowiedzUsuńnarzuta jest cudowna! :) wpisuję ją na listę - MUST HAVE! :P
What beautiful fabric, such a lovely quilt and great tutorial! The very first quilt I made was using the drunkards path block. I didn't know curves were supposed to be difficult, so I just got on with it!
OdpowiedzUsuńso beautiful - you have done an amazing job and a great tutorial too. I have had one attempt at curves and was not very successful, but really need to try again :-)
OdpowiedzUsuńI don't have experience sewing curves... yet! But I'd love to learn :)
OdpowiedzUsuńYour quilt is beautiful. Thank you for the great tutorial. I haven't sewn any curves in years. I did make a Drunkard's Path block for a Sampler Quilt I started. I have to admit, I am intimidated by curves. After seeing your beautiful quilt, I will have to work up the nerve to try again.
OdpowiedzUsuńHELLO! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL QUILT! THANKS FOR SHARING THE DETAILS AND A NEAT GIVEAWAY TOO! HAPPY STITCHING!
OdpowiedzUsuńmsstitcher1948@yahoo.com
Gorgeous quilt, and wonderful tutorial. I've never been to quilt market but would love to go one day.
OdpowiedzUsuńI've just started playing with curves in the past few months but I'm smitten with their possibilities!
OdpowiedzUsuńOh I love it, and it's a perfect pattern for me to practice sewing my curves. I purchased, and am still going thru, the Curves Class from Rachel Hauser of Stitched in Color. I love them and I'm still slow and nervous so I need to continue practicing away.
OdpowiedzUsuńSo so gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the tutorial :)
OdpowiedzUsuńI love your quilt, it's so pretty! I've never sewn curves in a quilt before, only when bag making, but I think I should give it a go!
OdpowiedzUsuńI absolutely love your quilt - it is such a fun quilt! Thank you for the great tutorial and giveaway!
OdpowiedzUsuńThis quilt is astonishing! I sewed clothes and bags before I started quilting, so curves don't freak me out. That said, I know I will have to practice to get my seam allowances super accurate. I'd love to try your design!
OdpowiedzUsuńI LOVE drunkard path! I work with tweezers and without pins - works great for me.
OdpowiedzUsuńSusanne
What a fun pattern. That you for the tutorial.
OdpowiedzUsuńThank you for this pattern. When I first saw this, I was stunned. It's so pretty. I've never been to quilt market, but I would love to go sometime.
OdpowiedzUsuńBeautiful quilt and great fabric line. Bravo!
OdpowiedzUsuńBeautiful quilt and great fabric line. Bravo!
OdpowiedzUsuńThank you for sharing this beautiful quilt tutorial, I love it!
OdpowiedzUsuńUtterly beautiful!
OdpowiedzUsuńI love this fabric and the beautiful quilt that you created. Thank you so much for the tutorial. I have never been to quilt market but would love to go. As for sewing curves, have tried in the past with mixed results. This quilt in the motivation I need to try again. Thanks for the giveaway.

This quilt is so gorgeous! I love curves and don't sew with them nearly enough.
OdpowiedzUsuńSew pretty, need help sewing curves that's for sure.
OdpowiedzUsuńSuch a beautiful quilt! This would be my first quilt with curves (other than applique).
OdpowiedzUsuńI love this quilt. I am not crazy about sewing curves, but can do it if I slow down. I absolutely would love to make this quilt
OdpowiedzUsuńLove this quilt so much, so speacial for some little pricess. I have done a few curves(dresden plate) but nothing like this. I am looking forward to trying more complicated curves. :)
OdpowiedzUsuńbeautiful quilt !!! I am working on a Dresden plate, going to applique the circles to the centers... Have done a few pieced curves, want to do more ♥♥♥
OdpowiedzUsuńSo beautiful. I have never sewn curves, but now I am going to practice!
OdpowiedzUsuńThanks so much for the wonderful tutorial. I saw this quilt on pinterest and was so thankful to find the tutorial. Thanks for sharing. I am going to give this a try.
OdpowiedzUsuńI fell in L.O.V.E. with all of Mo's beautiful fabrics and quilts in Portland recently. Her stuff is just stunning, and thank you so much for offering this giveaway!! I've not sewn curves before, but would love to get my feet wet! :)
OdpowiedzUsuńsewing curves is a new one for me, but would love to try this! Love your tutorial!
OdpowiedzUsuńBeautiful quilt!
OdpowiedzUsuńSo nice! I would like to make it for one of my daughters who needs a little whimsy and comfort right now in her life. It reminds me of when she just a little girl and loved to play at the beach with her sand toys. I always wanted to take her to the ocean, but we could not afford it back then. She will enjoy the textures, colors, and shapes...kinda like a memory quilt and telling her story of being at the beach.
OdpowiedzUsuńMy experience with curves is using the Curve Master tool on my machine and taking classes at quilt conventions and my local quilt shops. I love movement so your design caught my eye when I was perusing Facebook. I love working with the drunkard's path and love to play with direction and illusion. For me quilting has to tell a story whether it is my story, someone else's, or the quilt's story...my way of writing a novel and we really get to snuggle up with it too!
Thanks for sharing your tutorial!
Beautiful quilt!!!! I am just starting to learn curve piecing so not much to tell yet. Thanks
OdpowiedzUsuńThis quilt is stunning!! Love it! My experience with curves.....took a class for the New York Beauty quilt and made all the spikes and avoided sewing those curves. Finally the teacher noticed and wouldn't leave my side until I sewed some finished blocks!! lol Glad I overcame the fear but the quilt still sits in a box needing to be finished! Thanks for the inspiration maybe i'll sew some today!
OdpowiedzUsuńQuilting curves can definitely be challenging. I made my first sampler quilt about 18 years ago and really enjoyed trying to make all the seams match perfectly and fit concave to convex curves together with pins before sewing. I found there just was No Other way of "Getting around it" lol. Now the first child is 19 and it's time to start a new quilt. This one has really inspired me but looks so hard to do. I'm sure I can do it if I take my time. Thanks for sharing it here and a chance to win too!
OdpowiedzUsuńSuch a fun quilt, I love it. Now I haven't done much with quilting with curves but have done several sewing projects with them. Such as sleeves and what not. There not my favorite but they are doable. The first time I did a sleeve though not very pretty. I think I ended up ripping it out 3 times before I let my grandma help me fix it.
OdpowiedzUsuńI've done some curves and found them to be fun. I just go slow and am not a perfectionist. I love your use of the drunkard's path to make the waves.
OdpowiedzUsuńI love this quilt. With your great tutorial, I feel certain that I could make it1 Please, pick me!
OdpowiedzUsuńI have done several quilts using drunkard's path blocks. I love all the ways you can arrange them to get different looks. This quilt is so pretty!
OdpowiedzUsuńThis quilt is so beautiful! I have never sewed curves before, but I think this is the one I will do it with.
OdpowiedzUsuńI have done one quilt using my Go baby DP, and have been looking for another project to sew curves! This looks like the absolute perfect solution! It is spectacular, and your tutorial is amazing. Thanks.
OdpowiedzUsuńWow what a beautiful quilt. I've made a curved blk in a sampler class that I took last year. To my surprise it turned out easier than I thought it would and looks great. Thanks for the chance to win.
OdpowiedzUsuńBeautiful quilt! I've made curves in my sampler. Thanks for the chance.
OdpowiedzUsuńThis quilt is absolutely beautiful! I would love to make it! I have made several quilts with curves. My favorite quilt is the cathedral window. Quilted by hand it is not difficult but the folded overy pieces create a curve that has to be just right for the corners to come together.
OdpowiedzUsuńIt is one of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen. I'd love to make one for my new (and first) grandchild. My only experience with curves was making a sawtooth cat pattern on a wall hanging for a friend.
OdpowiedzUsuńBeautiful quilt! Would love to win the fabric!!
OdpowiedzUsuńIt is a wonderful quilt! I am a diver so this pattern got me especially. My first attempt to sew with curves was a total desaster, but I am improving...
OdpowiedzUsuńI have grand daughters who would be so thrilled to have a quilt similar to this! And one of my goals is to go to quilt market--such a long way though
OdpowiedzUsuńYou've made a lovely quilt. Have yet to try curves but am ready to give it a go. Thanks for the giveaway.
OdpowiedzUsuńbssuttongarner@aol.com
This is so beautiful! I have sewn a drunkard's path quilt using batiks, but yours is so unique with the colorful waves! Thank you for the chance to win the pre-cut fabric. How fun!
OdpowiedzUsuńI love making curves. I didn't think I could make them but the first time I tried I fell in love with it.
OdpowiedzUsuńHis quilt is stunning! And definitely going to make this. DP is one if my favorites such fun. Thank you for a lovely quilt!!!!!
OdpowiedzUsuńThis is one beautiful quilt. i would love to try to make it! my email is catsmeow77777@yahoo.com
OdpowiedzUsuńI've done curves only once in a very small table topper! would like to try again though.
OdpowiedzUsuńmystica123athotmaildotcom
I've only had minor experience .. I did a couple of drunkards path blocks for a quilting class I attended .. because of limited time at the store I had to rely on my own interpretation of the instructions .. i just love how you can make so many different designs from the same two little pieces!
OdpowiedzUsuńI have seen this quilt in EVERY quilt market recap post and loved it every time. So beautiful! I have a drunkards path that my grandmother made, so it is on my list of things to do to remember her. I never would have realized that is how you made this!
OdpowiedzUsuńI've only done curves by hand piecing, but want to master curves on the machine.
OdpowiedzUsuńThis quilt has gone onto my MUST MAKE IT list. I love it. I am redecorating my retirement abode in seashell and beach themes. Bath is completed finishing up kitchen then bedroom will be next. This would be a so special quilt for my on the beach bedroom. Thanks for sharing and inspiring us. Maureen
OdpowiedzUsuńwhat a lovely quilt and wonderful idea! My family loves the beach - they would adore this! Thank you for sharing the tutorial
OdpowiedzUsuńThis is a beautiful quilt. Everything about it the colors, the movement and design are wonderful. Would love a chance at your give-a-way. I have done a drunkards path wall hanging and table runner. I agree at first if you have never done curved piecing to try it out for a little bit and then you will wonder why you never did it before. Have a great day all and thanks for having a give a way..
OdpowiedzUsuńYour quilt is beautiful! I haven't done much with curves, but I love how they look so I may have to attempt it.
OdpowiedzUsuńHi there! I was looking at this collection last week but was holding off until I found a pattern I liked. I have never attempted curves, but i would learn for this bundle and collection. I hope to win it. There are 3 babies in the family coming this fall and 1 mother is expecting a girl. This would make a great gift for the baby! Thanks!
OdpowiedzUsuńI forgot to enter my email... imwoodwedding@yahoo.com
UsuńI have zero experience in sewing curves, but I so want to learn!! I have also never been to quilt market, although it is a goal of mine! Love this quilt!!!
OdpowiedzUsuńThis quilt is amazing!
OdpowiedzUsuńThe quilt is beautiful. The tutoriol is excelent. This quilt is now on my "I have to Make One" list. Thanks for sharing
OdpowiedzUsuńI love your fabric. I have sewn lots of curves with my heirloom sewing but have not tried any with quilting.
OdpowiedzUsuńbettydrake1@gmail.com
I would love to win, and then I could practice sewing curves, with which I don't have too much experience. My most enjoyable quilting experience was making quilts with my teen-age granddaughters for their little cousins (my grandsons.)
OdpowiedzUsuńLovely quilt!!! Can you make this without the acuquilt
OdpowiedzUsuńWow wonderful, I pinned this quilt along time ago, and didn't know that you had made a tutorial, of course I could never do that many Drunkard Path blocks, but it is so beautiful.
OdpowiedzUsuńThank you for such an easy to understand and amazing tutorial :) haberdashery
OdpowiedzUsuńI will add a little layer of it by saying thank you for this blog which is both fun and intelligent. It is a real pleasure to come and sail there.
