This is a very special quilt for me, my favourite quilt I made so far. However, its history of making is quite long… First blocks were made in 2014 or even earlier (first photo of WIP I managed to find is dated 2014, I'm not sure whether on my old laptop I won't find earlier photos). Top was finished in 2017, but I bounded it in November 2019. This means that it took me 5 years to make it (I'm sure that I've got WIP's which will wait more to be finished:).

I'm sure that it would take me longer to finished it if it wasn't for Margaret (Silesian Quilt) who quilt it on her long-arm. The quilting is simple, but yet very effective. I am so grateful that Margaret decided to quilt it and so honored!

This is a simple log-cabin quilt with red Suzuki Koseki flowers in the centre, but I incorporated in each block love themed sentences. It was so fun to look for words that can build full sentences and I love all of them:) My favorite is probably 'I love you to the moon and back', where I used Heather Ross moon insted of the word (bottom left block in the below photo).

All blocks are framed with black print with numbers, but I didn't have it enough for whole border so I used another print of Suzuko Koseki with daisies (also red as the one used in the centres of each block). The binding is made of selvedges. It is just perfect for this quilt (I have to admit that I love such binding so much that I would gladly bound all my quilt this way:).

I didn't not take any photos of finished quilt before sending it to LP&Q, but I've got a few (crappy) photos of some blocks and finished top:

When I started quilting 10 years ago I remember exactly what I was thinking while watching (admiring!) others works. I was impressed by the craftmanship and I was convinced than I never ever be able to piece some blocks, get know some techiniques etc. For instance, I couldn't figure out how Dahlia Blossom quilts are made (I was sure that they are pieced by hand, because back then I thought that piecing curves is impossible [I know - silly me;)]).

I was convinced not only that some types of works are and will be forever beyond my skills, but also I wasn't even dreaming than that one day I will be designing quilts by my own.

How wrong I was... Fun fact is that I started designing my own projects in the first year of quilting. I just did it naturally. Without any special preparation.

Buttefly Blossom, finished block, 16in square

Back then I was hit by the idea of making a flower from butterflies. I knew exactly how it should look like, but it was just before I get know paper-piecing method. Therefore I tried to recreate my idea using applique. In a fact first flower made of butterflies was not a quilted one, but it was cut out of felt (I used it as little mug rugs).
I thought that my first flower made of butterfles was this one (CLICK), but recently while organizing my sewing room I found a pillow top made before this one was made. If I remember it correctly I just learned how to make appliques and it was one of the first tests of this technique, but I decided to add a cord on the edges (I thought then that it will look more pretty:).
[I hesitate whether I should add photo of this project, it's just ugly:)]

I wasn't able to design the circles of butterflies properly, but I gave several tries to draw it (in Paint - I know, what a perfect software for print designing). Here is one of the prints:

At the end of last year all of a sudden I decided to make this pattern using paper-pieced method. And it worked perfectly! I don't remember when was the last time (if ever!) when I pieced so many repeats so quickly! The finished block is presented at the beginning of this post.
So a dream from the title of this post did finally come true… I was so proud that after many years of quilting I was finally able to design the pattern in the way I really loved.
The pattern is a combination of two of my previous patterns (THIS one and THIS one) and it's quite big (16" square).

Later on when I was brownsing my old designs on my very old laptop I found that I actually designed circles of butterflies in the past! I just forgot about it… (I have no idea how I could forget such design). It is different than the above pattern, its shape is based on hexagon and probably is more beginners friendly.

Here's the comparison of these two patterns:
When I published on Instagram the photo of my finished block I said that this pattern will be one of my free patterns this Spring (for my 10th blogging and quilting anniversary).
I started making this quilt back in 2015 and it was finished just recently (in November 2019). But that's not important. The most important is that it is finished, beautifully quilted (by Gosia from Cotton Cafe) and pattern for it is published!
Last year I contacted after a long break folks at Love Patchwork & Quilting (wonderful Alice, who was working at LP&Q when I first published there) and they booked me for 3 issues. So Alphabet Soup (LP&Q name for We love you, Anna baby quilt) is not the last quilt to be published this year.

I'm so happy how this quilt came out. The main reason is the quilting. It wouldn't be possible without help of Gosia. My quilting would ruin this quilt, but Gosia brought out of it the best!
The quilt is back in our home and it covers Anna's bed. Although she is not a baby anymore, she appreciates I-spy concept of this quilt, especially because I loaded it with kittens:)))

I znów ten sam schemat: prostota w projekcie, bogactwo kolorów.

[June 2019 - catching up with my WIP's - presented on IG]

Lately I'm in the mood into old hoarded lines. This is another example of my WIP's (I've been trying to move forward with all my WIP's, but this way it is getting slower).

Mendocino, well-loved old line designed by Heather Ross, some time ago reprinted, but I'm trying to use my old Mendocino stash for this quilt (as well as some other old favs by HR).

Again, I try to make something simple in design, but rich in colors.

Blocks are quite large. Therefore I need only 5 more (brown is already started). I plan to add some salmon sashing and maybe fussy-cut stars.

In the meantime I am enjoying slow process of digging in old-fave beauties...

I always wanted to make a happy quilt from my favourite Sandi Henderson's lines (Ginger Blossom, Farmers Market and Meadowsweet). In the past I even started not one, but even too, unfortunately I didn't finish it (HERE).

I knew it have to be fussy-cut, colorful, but simple. And I think I'm heading into the right direction!

I have a special feelings to one of the prints from Ginger Blossom collection as it was one of 8 of my first bolts to my quilt shop... So no surprises that I started piecing the blocks with this print.
To był czas, gdy kolekcja Pretty Potent (zaprojektowana przez Annę Marię Horner) właśnie weszła do sprzedaży i szybko odkryłam jej potencjał na takie właśnie projekty. Początkowo zszyłam ok. 30 sześcioboków i zaraz potem moja uwaga powędrowała w kierunku innych projektów. Najnowsza linia, z której wycięłam trojtkąty to obecnie będąca w sprzedaży kolekcja Sweet Dreams.

/ I started this quilt in 2014 (HERE's a blog post about it) and I still remember the joy of fussy-cutting the triangles. It was the time when Pretty Potent (a collection designed by Anna Maria Horner) just hit the stores and I quickly discovered how great this line is for fussy-cutting. At first I pieced approx. 30 hexies and I moved my attention to another project. From time to time I was getting back to this project. Whenever new lines of AMH were hitting the stores, new hexies were made. The newest line I included in the quilt top is the current AMH collection: Sweet Dreams. I was able to fit almost at least one print from each collection of AMH (besides the Bohemian, which I own only scraps - but I plan to manage somehow and add one hex made of this line).
Now my top is almost done (it will constist of 82 hexies). I have to piece 4 hexies to the last row (not shown on the photo), add a border and send it to long-arm quilter. I just can't wait to finish it, although since I'm able to find some time for sewing, each time I'm tempted by new projects...
edit (August 2019)
it isn't finished yet, because while piecing the last parts I realised that I need one row and column more to have it symetric. I already pieced some of the missing blocks, but I'm out of prints to use, so I wait for new AMH lines:)

9 - this is the name given to my newest quilt (the only one started and finished this year). This quilt is a great example how I sew. I begin with some idea, very clear, but then always something happens during piecing. Over the past years I had many many ideas for quilts with solids only. I even started some of them, but I always ended with using prints and solids only as addition. The same story took place with this quilt.

When new Quiltcon
challange was announced I thought that it will be a great opportunity
to finally execute my idea about 9-patch block. But then I forgot about
sewing in general (small baby, no time). At the end of November I got e-mail
reminder about Quiltcon entries deadline, but I thought that it's too late to start a quilt. But a few days before deadline I just sat and started sewing.

My idea was to make Nine-patch block consisting of text only (because I realised that the name of this block consist of 9 letters:), each letter filling one piece (in my imagination all letters were extremely fat). A quilt without alternating Nine-patch block.

I wanted to make it unrecognizable at first glance as
a 9-patch block quilt (especially when you look at it from afar). I
thought that I will achieve it by quilting (for example the lines surrounding the centre
block) and by using black and white (or cream) solids (the same background for each piece of Nine-patch block, only letters were supposed to be in other color).

I don't know even what exactly happend that I picked low volume fabrics instead of solids. I remember only that I was looking for some text fabrics to make some fussy cuts and when I finished a couple of letters, I realised that I didn't use solids at all:)))

In the daylight my quilt looks a bit different, the colors of background are more "solid". In the artificial light (as in the photo) it is clearly visible that there are two 9-patch blocks: one in the centre
(consisting of nine 9 centimeters blocks with paper-pieced letters) and the outer blocks (a border), which together
form bigger 9-patch block. I included a lot of "nines" in my quilt (for
example, there are 9 quilting grey lines surrounding the centre block)
and some fussy cut symbols (in the centre block, on the binding). I
didn't use solids at all, however you may have such impression (some solid parts were simply cut from printed fabrics).

When I finished this quilt (actually wall-hanging, because it is 31" square) and put a photo on Instagram, I just knew that my quilt won't make the cut. But I didn't actually care about it. I've got time for sewing very very rare and when I sew, I just want to have some fun.
This quilt was hanging a few days on the wall in our livingroom, then I rolled it and hide it. I even didn't trim the thread on the back. Most of quilts living with us, are not fully finished at the back. And I was so sure that it will be rejected, that I didn't want to use my free time for trimming thread.

I was very surprised when I found out that "9" was accepted to the show. I didn't jump to the moon and my first thought was that now I will have trim all those thread:)))))) I hope that I will feel some excitement about Quiltcon 2017 in the near future. Will see.

PS. If you want to copy my calm attitude about contests, just be busy (for example you can make another baby:))) - all these additional things, won't impress you, because you simply won't have time! Finishing quilt will be a success itself:)
PS2. You can submit up to 3 quilts to Quiltcon for one entrance fee, so this year I submitted also two other old quilts, including 'Patchwork is so exciting' quilt (which was rejected last year). It was rejected for the second time:) And this is my favourite quilt, in my opinion the best of mine.

W tym roku został odrzucony po raz drugi:) A to mój ulubiony quilt, najfajniejszy moim zdaniem.jednoiglechttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05090906339628410047noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995310969112005460.post-41800825972670561252016-02-23T15:43:00.001+01:002016-02-23T15:45:29.150+01:00Wystawa w SzczecinieThis is a post about exibition in Poland, where two of my quilts were present.

A few years back Modern Quilt Guild change its definition of modern quilting. It caused a lot of controversy and many posts were written about this (HERE you can read both definitions: old and new). Some people stated that actually nothing has changed and it won't cause any changes. But it did, unfortunately (this is a subject for another post).
I didn't write a single post about it then, because I just didn't take care of it. I was feeling a modern quilter and no one could cause that I'll change my mind. And especially some far away organization who grew up on the work people like me, but living somewhere else.
There are not many modern quilters in Poland, but recently we finally decided to make something with this and we started a group on Facebook. Basicly, we want to discuss all things relating to modern quilting, show our works and just socialize.
So now I have a reason to think more about definition of modern quilting. Now such post makes sense to me (it is probably first of many such posts!).
And I won't deny: it is important that my quilt was Quiltcon rejected (THIS one). I was expecting this and kind of hoping for this, because this way I am more legitimated to talk about modern quilting.

I don't like one thing about MQG actions: this is probably the first time in history of art, when a group of people is taking over a name of some direction and excludes people who were firsty commonly known as a representatives of this direction. Never ever in history of art something like this happened. Usually artists having roots in some direction, come up with it's own name, sometimes only by adding "post" to it (sometimes they're doing it by themselves, sometimes the names are given afterwards). For instance, let's just take a look at impressionism and postimpressionism. The first movement was an opposition to the conventional art community. The second too, but the postimpressionism movement emerged as a reaction against rules settled by impressionism. So both were against conventional art, but postimpressionism never took over the name 'Impressionism', even though they feel that they are some kind of next level movement, because they're rejecting Impressionism limitations. Why? Probably because they respected each other.

Teraz więc mam już powód by spróbować zdefiniować patchwork nowoczesny.

Pierwszy ruch stanowił opozycję do konwencjonalnego malarstwa. Dlaczego? Pewnie dlatego, że szanowali się nawzajem.

***

To talk about modern quilting, I will use some images of traditional quilts and my own quilts. Please note, that this posts contains my own feelings and insights. I am not an oracle or a man knowing everything. So I would love to discuss it if you like!

Let's start with two images: probably the most well-known traditional quilt Dear Jane (source) and one of my early mini-quilts (Button play mini-quilt) which was considered modern when it was created (by many people, including some MQG members who showed it on local meetings as an example of modern quilts).

So what differences we can see? (except differences in craftmanship and the size of quilts)

design - Dear Jane has traditional design, it includes geometric blocks, it isn't minimalist in form, my mini includes also some geometric blocks, but the theme of it is contemporary and it's quite minimalist,

colors - Dear Jane has many colors, but all of them are muted while colors on my quilt are flashy and saturated,

types of fabrics - Dear Jane was made from traditional fabrics (probably some old clothes too), my quilt was made from modern fabrics, including text and novelty prints,

prints - Dear Jane was made of fabrics with very small prints, my quilt was made with different scale prints,

grid work - Dear Jane has regular grid work and it has a border all over the whole quilt, my quilt is asymmetric, it has partial border on two sides,

background - Dear Jane has bright background, almost no negative space, my quilt has low volume background, which is quite overhelming at some parts, there's a lot of negative space,

binding - Dear Jane has scalloped edges finished with binding made probably from one type of fabric, my quilt has straight edges with binding made of fabrics in different colors, but the same print.

Can you see some similarities? I can't, but if there are, they must be very small and not important.

Could my quilt be considered as traditional? I seriously doubt in it. And I don't think that any traditional quilter would like to piece something like my mini-quilt (but I would love to piece DJ someday - of course using totally different fabrics and colors).

My mini-quilt does not include improvisional piecing and it's not made (even partially) from solids.

Would it make a huge difference if it would be made of solids? I don't think so, at least the difference won't be so huge as between DJ quilt and mine.

So is there any other reason why my quilt should not be considered as modern? (this is open question, I didn't get any answer by myself, counting on you:)

Poważnie w to wątpię.

Let's now compare my above mini-quilt with another quilt of mine, made mostly from solids (I can't put any example of a quilt with improvisional piecing, because I didn't make such quilts. So far).

/ A teraz porównajmy mój powyższy mini-quilt z inną moją makatką, uszytą w większości z tkanin jednobarwnych (nie mogę zamieścić przykładu quiltu szytego metodą improwizacyjną, gdyż nie szyję takich quiltów. Jak dotąd).

Differences:

design - Button play mini-quilt includes some geometric blocks, but the theme of it is contemporary and it's quite minimalist, NY Beauty wall hanging uses traditional block without alternating it (except one block which was made of text fabrics),

colors - comparing to NY Beauty quilt Button play mini is muted and colors are not saturated,

types of fabrics - both quilts use modern fabrics, but NY Beauty is mostly made of solids,

prints - both quilts were made using different scale prints, but on NY Beauty quilt this is not so visible, because of usage of solids,

grid work - Button play quilt is asymmetric, it has partial border on two sides, NY Beauty quilt is quite symmetric, it has border all over whole quilt,

background - both quilts have almost the same amount of negative space,

binding - Button play quilt has binding made of fabrics in different colors, but the same print, NY Beauty is finished with binding made from one fabric.

So which one is modern? Both? Or only the one on the left? On the right? None of them?

At first glance NY Beauty quilt could be judged as "more modern" than Button play, because it is very bright and colors are saturated (and it uses solids), but when you look into the details, you can notice that Button play has more details considered as modern.

In my opinion, both are modern. NY Beauty is closer to traditional, but still it is so different than traditional quilts that it can't be named that way. It simply is not innovative, but still modern.

rodzaje tkanin - obydwa quilty zostały uszyte z tkanin nowoczesnych, quilt NY Beauty w większości z tkanin jednobarwnych,

lamówka - w przeciwieństwie do makatki Button play quilt NY Beauty został wykończony lamówką zrobioną z jednej tkaniny.

A więc który z nich jest nowoczesny? Obydwa?

I could compare in such way more of my quilts, but I think that now you get my point. And you can easily understand why I don't like the definition on MQG website.

I just think that the old definition respected quilters that started modern quilting movement and quilters who are not making traditional quilts. It was more... true.

I had to make some new decorations, Christmas ornaments and a wall hanging for our dining area. Our new wall hanging is totally sweet, but it makes our celebration even more happy. I have to make one or two new pillows, but not this year.

I used some Dashwood Studio Christmas fabrics (from Winter Wonderland collection) - I just adore these prints and colors. I'm happy, because I can buy Dashwood fabrics in Poland (finally!).

And here's our Christmas tree:

/ A tak prezentuje się nasza tegoroczna choinka:

The e-mails saying if your quilt is accepted or rejected to the Quiltcon show were send last night (for Americans it was just an ordinary afternoon, for people living in Europe it was a starry night).

My quilt was rejected.

I was expecting this.

Not because there were over 1800 of entries. Not because there were many outstanding quilts submitted (this is the official 'justification' from MQG e-mail). Not because there were quilts better, more beautiful than mine or I don't know what more than mine.

My quilt was rejected, because it was too cool for Quiltcon.
(I didn't figure it out by myslef - such lovely words I read on IG and Alison @ Little Island Quilting is the author of it).
My quilt is unique. It was based on a brilliant concept and has a story. I've seen some accepted quilts and I don't like many of them. I've seen also some rejected which I found ugly or at least not interesting and I felt that mine should be hanging on Quiltcon not theirs.

If your quilt was rejected too and you don't have the same feelings about your quilt, stop quilting.
If your quilt was accepted and you feel that it's better than the rest because it was selected, stop quilting.

Quilting is not for people who stop loving their quilts, because some judges didn't like it or for people who are loving their quilts only because some judges like it.

And I don't think that it is necessary to tell you for what type of people quilting is. These two above theses tell all.

You may find my words not appropriate, too honest, too cocky, but please, before judging me, look deep down to your heart and answer the question if anyone should feel that their quilt is not good enough. Or if anyone should not like the quilt she/he is proud of.

Last, but not least, remember that in competition judges always reject (right before finals) things or people who could be judged by the audience as winners and could threaten the things or people who meet organizator's criteria:)
(seriously - just watch any of the competition tv series!)

So my quilt is too cool for Quiltcon (I have no reasons not to believe Alison). Just read her post from last year (HERE) and you'll understand a lot!

From the very beginning of Quiltcon history, I read many posts about it, about judges, about how they job is difficult, about rejected quilts and what should feel or do quilters dealing with rejection.

I've got some short thoughts about it and I would love to share it with you (randlomly):

- judges don't have a hard task to do, they are always 3 - the potential 'responsibility' for bad mood of authors of rejected quilts is fuzzy, actually there is no responsibility, a judge always can say that other judges didn't like your quilt or I like your quilt, but it didn't meet criteria settled by MQG or (my favorite) there were so many quilts... Or another favorite: this is a key of judging, some quilts have to be rejected;

- rejection is always personal, if your quilt is being judged by a man (not by computer or SI), it is always about personal likes or dislikes, even when judge has some criteria to follow. In the end always personal opinions prevail. And if someone doesn't like your quilt or likes other more - it is personal (people who think that personal is bad are mistaken - having your own taste is natural, isn't it?);

- once a former Quiltcon judge ask people to make a simple excercise and try to exclude some quilts from being selected and replaced it with rejected quilts. I think it was easy-peasy task, because we all have our own likes and dislikes. The harder part would be revealing such choices. Why? Because all of us are just quilters, each one would publish such choices alone, not in the company of other judges (the key are the above remarks about 'responsibility') and noone wants to say out loud that she (or he) doesn't like this particular quilt. Being a judge and rejecting many quilts in simpler than choosing one or two and tell everyone that it's not good enough / interesting / lovely;

- last year we were sharing (in the private group) some general remarks about Quiltcon entries, that there were not many original (in design) or outstanding quilts, but there were many quilts like many others showed on the internet - made technically very precisely and well quilted (usually by long-arm quilters), but still without any idea behind it. We all were wondering what is the reason of it: aren't there any quilts that have WOW-factor? Or are there such strict criteria that such quilts don't make a cut? I think that it everything depends what is the goal of people organizing quilt show and simply their choices; and of course on our likes and dislikes!

- some of the judges feedback after last year's Quiltcon was that it's not about making a quilt that was based on Pinterest picture. I couldn't agree more, but seeing a lot of such quilts accepted to the show (with very well-known patterns from other areas of design), it's hard to believe that it was honest opinion;

- I have got more to share, but now I simply forgot about it - I may add some points later:)

Oh, I forgot to mention, that this post contains my personal opinions (it should be obvious, but anyway it's worth saying). You may like it or not, agree with it or not, but you should respect it (whatever it means to the common customs;).
If you don't like my quilt - don't hesitate to put it in the comments! I totally respect that. It won't change my opinion about my quilt, but your opinion about the rest (judging, Quiltcon etc.) might made me change my mind. I'm only human, very emotional human and I can be simply wrong.

- sędziowie nie mają trudnego zadania, jest ich zawsze troje, a więc potencjalna "odpowiedzialność" za czyjeś złe samopoczucie w związku z odrzuceniem jest rozmyta, a właściwie w ogóle nie a takiej odpowiedzialności; sędzia zawsze może powiedzieć, że to inni sędziowie nie polubili Twojego quiltu albo, że polubili, ale nie spełniał kryteriów wyznaczonych przez MQG albo (moje ulubione) było tyle quiltów... Albo inny ulubieniec: istotą sędziowania jest to, że ktoś musi zostać odrzucony;

- odrzucenie jest zawsze personalne, jeśli Twój quilt jest oceniany przez człowieka (a nie komputer czy sztuczną inteligencję), to zawsze chodzi o czyjeś upodobania, nawet jeśli sędzia ma wyznaczone kryteria, to na końcu i tak przeważają osobiste preferencje. A jeśli ktoś nie lubi Twojego quiltu albo lubi inne bardzej, to jest to personalne (niektórzy sądzą, że takie podejście jest złe, ale oni się mylą - każdy ma przecież swój własny gust, więc to jest naturalne, nieprawdaż?);

- kiedyś były sędzia Quiltconu spytał ludzi by przeprowadzili proste ćwiczenie i spróbowali zastąpić choć jedną wybraną przez sędziów pracę jakąś odrzuconą. Moim zdaniem jest to proste zadanie, gdyż każdy ma swoje upodobania. Trudniejsze byłoby ujawnienie takich wyborów. Dlaczego? Bo opublikowanie naszych osobistych osądów w pojedynkę nie jest sytuacją komfortową, sędziowie mają ten komfort, że występują jako "ciało" (kluczem są powyższe uwagi o odpowiedzialności) i chyba nikt nie chciałby na głos, publicznie, wskazać, że nie lubi tego konkretnego z wybranych quiltów. Bycie sędzią i odrzucanie quiltów jest prostsze niż wybranie jednego, dwóch i rozgłoszenie wszystkim, że te właśnie prace nie były wystarczająco dobre / interesujące / śliczne;

- jeden z sędziów zostawił jako feedback taką myśl, że w zgłaszaniu prac na Quiltcon nie chodzi o to by szyć quilty na podstawie obrazków z Pinterest. Całkowicie się z tym zgadzam, ale widząc wiele zaakceptowanych quiltów, które są właśnie na takich obrazkach wzorowane (albo stanowią kopie wzorów popularnych obecnie), wątpię w szczerość tej opinii;

PS. And yes, I cried. Like a baby:) but I get over it very fast (I was even surprised that I didn't spend whole night crying and worrying that I'm a bummer!). I think that my experience in taking failures like a man is growing:) even though I am now more sensitive than I was in the past.
PS. Oh, and I suddenly have an idea for another Quiltcon quilt. And it's brilliant, because the idea behind it will make me happy no matter if it is selected or not (so if I have a time, I will make it - will see).
PS. I promise, it's a last PS:) I didn't even get the original notice from MQG - it was lost somewhere (not in spam folder), so I find out about rejection from a second copy (first forwarded message was also lost!). I think this was the sign that they were wrong about rejecting my quilt:))))))))))

/ PS.
Preparing the shape
Draw the shape of Christmas tree on the paper of two-sided vliseline, add seam allowances and cut the shape leaving a few centimeters (less than 1/4") of vliseline extra.

Iron on the shape on the left side of one of the fabrics. Cut the shape following the line of seam allowance.

Przyprasuj wycięty kształt do lewej strony jednego z kawałków tkaniny.

Sewing

Pin Christmas tree shape and second piece of fabric right sides together. Sew these two pieces together. Leave the gap on the bottom of Christmas tree (through this gap decoration will be put on the top of the tree).

Szycie
Przypnij szpilkami wycięty kształt choinki do drugiego kawałka tkaniny, prawymi stronami do siebie.

Cut the Christmas tree shape. Cut out the corners (but don't damage the stitches) and make an notches in the corners.

Wycinanie kształtu
Wytnij choinkę. Odetnij rogi (bez uszkadzania szwów) i natnij w miejscach wklęsłych (również bez naruszania szwów).
Turning inside out
Peel of the paper from vliseline. Turn tree decoration inside out. Special tool or simply a sushi stick can be very helpful.
Formowanie kształtu
Oderwij papier z flizeliny. Uformuj odpowiednio kształt (delikatnie by nie naruszyć szwów).

I wrote once a very personal post about submitting quilts for contests. I was then sure that I never will enter my quilt to the big contest (like Quiltcon). But this year I thought that my very old idea (from 2012, the time I was making THIS mini-quilt) should finally be executed. I'm not good in finishing quilts, especially now when I have a baby at home, so I thought that I needed some deadline. Quiltcon deadline seamed great for this purpose! I thought also that I may give it a try and just find out if my quilt is good enought for the show or not.

So I was very busy lately. Making this quilt was very strange, because I only had about 45 minutes each day for piecing (sometimes a little bit more, sometimes at all, because my little 7 month daughter is the rare example of baby who don't need long naps during the day). Only on quilting I had more hours in the row (during the weekend, with a help of my husband and older daughter).

My quilt is a modern version of New York Beauty block. I designed names of the cities and put them on the outer circles instead of rays of sunshine. Most names are paper-pieced, but there are also some appliqued and pieced blocks (from wonderful Kumiko Fujita fabrics). While I was piecing the blocks I was often listing to the song 'The sound of San Francisco' by Global Deejays and at first I wanted to piece some of the cities mentioned in this song. Finally, I picked some cities important to me with rather short names (name of my hometown is too long unfortunately and won't fit into two blocks, even as applique). I picked also some places I would love to visit some day. Plus a little hidden name of the city connected with Quiltcon 2016:) (when I saw the name of this city on the Kumiko Fujita fabric I just knew I had to include it!).

I tried to incorporate some characteristic symbols in each block. So you'll find yellow quarter inner circle as symbol of yellow cabs and quarter inner circle with apples - in New York city block. The name of Tokyo is narrowed to show its character (traffic jams, high buildings), I used yellow print from Lighthearted collection designed by Ayumi (Pink Penguin) and the text in the narrowed letters is cut, so you won't be able to read whole words - this was the idea how to show that Japanese is very difficult language to learn. Sydney name is appliqued and I chose a font which brings me in mind surfers, I also put some other sea symbol (mermaids). The only one division of MQG in South America is in Sao Paulo, so I put in this block some sewing notions (my sister in law lived there recently and I used some colors which remind me her), I've added exclamation to show how loud and festive is carnival there. In the rest of the blocks I used mainly colors as symbols.
This is very personal quilt, so some symbols mean something only for me.

I named this wall hanging 'Patchwork is so exciting'. I took part of this name from Suzuko Koseki print. On the SK fabric you'll find the sentence 'Paris is so exciting', but I cut 'Paris' and put it in the inner circle of NY city block. Then I found word 'patchwork' on the very same fabric and I though that it would be a good sentence. So I had to shorten the cirlces in one of the NY city blocks and put it there. I repeated this way of hiding sentences in other blocks too (I love it so much that I wanted to repeat it over and over, but I stopped myself:).

The detail love about this quilt is selvedge binding. I made such binding in 2011 (HERE) and it was totally inspired by Suzuko Koseki way of binding potholders and other works. I made it a bit differently: I joined selvedges before binding a quilt (Suzuko Koseki sew a piece of binding on the edge and leave it raw).
I also embroider my name on the binding ('Julianna made it'), because one of the selvedges was quite plain (near the left bottom corner).

When I was making this quilt I realised that it is very similar to other quilt of mine, Autumn Spin (HERE). There are some differences (for example I didn't use so much brown), but I think I might have just be fixed in one style.
'Patchwork is so exctigin' reflects good my current color likes. I love lately navy and comparing to my previous quilts, there's a lot of navy in it.

I don't actually have a hope that my quilt will make a cut. There were over 1800 quilt entered, so you probably know how small are chances. I noticed that in the past Quiltcon shows most of the quilts were made of solids and probably while making quilt for show I should consider narrowing the number of prints I used, but simply it wouldn't be so 'mine' quilt. I make from time to time some things using majority of solids and the original NY block made by me in the past was using a lot of solids too, but this time I just wanted to make it this way. Using my favorite prints (old and new) in favorite colors. Dot.

my original blocks made short after I came up with idea of making NY Beauty with names of cities

Mój quilt to nowoczesna wersja bloku New York Beauty. Podczas szycia makatki często słuchałam piosenki "The sound of San Francisco" (Global Deejays) i początkowo myślałam o umieszczeniu niektórych nazw miast występujących w tym utworze.

Znajdziecie więc żółtą ćwiartkę koła symbolizującą żółte taksówki i ćwiartkę koła z jabłkami - w bloku z miastem New York.

Nazwałam ten quilt "Patchwork is so exciting". Na tkaninie SK można znaleźć napis "Paris is so exciting" - ucięłam Paryż, a resztę umieściłam w bloku z NY. Skróciłam kółka w innym bloku z NY i umieściłam go tam.

Makatka "Patchwork is so exciting" dobrze oddaje moje aktualne upodobania kolorystyczne. Uwielbiam ostatnio granat i w porównaniu do moich poprzednich prac jest tu go naprawdę sporo.

Zostało zgłoszonych ponad 1800 quiltów, więc same rozumiecie dlaczego. Użyłam ulubionych tkanin (nowych i starych). Kropka.jednoiglechttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05090906339628410047noreply@blogger.com22tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7995310969112005460.post-16678948396202613942015-11-07T22:58:00.004+01:002015-11-07T22:58:57.731+01:00Happy day / Radosny dzieńEnglish version below:)
This is a napkin holder (3 of 4 napkins at this table were sewn by me too). It can stand alone too, just as a decoration. This was my idea, I figure it out everthing by myself and it was fun to see that it works!

I feel Christmasy lately, so it's good time to finally show it. I'm making some Christmas ornaments shopping (each year I add some new ornaments to our collection), I'm planning what I will add to Mary's Advent calendar and just can't wait for Christmas (I know, too early for that!).

Do you feel Christmassy too?

Ostatnio jestem cały czas w świątecznym nastroju, więc to chyba dobra chwila by go w końcu pokazać.

Each day I think about starting some new projects, my head is full of them. But instead of it, I decided to continue hand piecing my #amhlapassacaglia quilt! This weekend I finished another partial rosette (with Innocent Crush fabrics) and made a scheme showing my progress (just couldn't help myself of not making such scheme:))).

/ I actually quilted something lately! It's not a quilt, it's a vest for my daughter, but it's always a good start for back to sewing. One side is very nice, but the other is full of mistakes (if it had been quilted, there wouldn't be any of these mistakes...). It's my first vest ever, so lessons learnt and next time it will be perfect (next time, I mean on spring:))).

Gosia z bloga Quilts My Way zorganizowała fajną zabawę letnią z niesamowicie atrakcyjnymi nagrodami.
/ I am such a looser! I sew very very rare and the blog is so empty, but when I actually sew something I forgot to mention about it here... It's not a big thing, only a cover for one armchair, but this is a good start! More photos HERE.
